Lessons from being Mexico's Team Leader at the IOI

Five international competitions (Indonesia, Hungary, Iran and others). What I learned about youth talent, discipline and national representation.

The International Olympiad in Informatics is the world league of young talent in competitive programming. I have five competitions accompanying the Mexican delegation, as coach and as Team Leader.

Talent exists — the ecosystem, not always

Mexico produces brilliant young people in algorithms every year. What's missing isn't talent — it's infrastructure: coaches, travel funds, university scholarships for medalists.

The medal isn't the goal

The goal is the process. Kids who go through the national selection learn data structures, abstract thinking and resilience. Today they are senior engineers, founders and academics.

Representing Mexico carries weight

In Tehran, in Yogyakarta, in Szeged. Carrying the flag is not a metaphor. It is responsibility and pride.
